Night Sky – The Cycle of Rebirth reflects the eternal movement of the stars as a metaphor for life. Fine threads flow across the pen, symbolizing stars that fall and are reborn in an endless cosmic cycle. Seven blue and gold accents anchor these currents, representing stages of spiritual transformation leading beyond the Six Realms toward rebirth in Buddha’s Pure Land.

The piece is executed using togidashi maki-e combined with inlay techniques. The deep black background is created by embedding crushed mother-of-pearl and powdered dried urushi lacquer into black lacquer and burnishing it to a subtle semi-matte finish that highlights the glossy threads. Grey tones emerge through baked tin powder, while a light sprinkling of platinum hirame powder adds a delicate sparkle. Blue accents are cut from vibrant New Zealand abalone shell, while gold elements are formed from fired gold powder and polished to a warm glow. Seven small silver tsuyudama “dewdrops” complete the design, adding quiet points of light across the flowing threads.
