Kingfisher and Lotus

AP Limited Editions presents a masterpiece in Chinkin Lacquer Art; a superb depiction of delicacy and grace in a carving technique of Japanese Lacquer Art. In the words of the Artist that crafted this fine writing instrument: “In a moment of brilliance, I aimed to capture the dynamic and static, the ephemeral and the eternal, by depicting a kingfisher diving into the water like a laser beam and a water lily, symbolizing nirvana in Buddhism.” The blue lines in the background were created by carving straight lines, then applying and burnishing a gradient of Urushi lacquer ranging from light blue to blue, blue-violet, and black. The kingfisher’s metallic sheen was achieved with the use of ultra-fine silver and platinum powder and blue Urushi pigment, The water lily was layered with a base of ultra-fine gold powder to enhance the white color, followed by ultra-fine suikin (mixture of silver and gold) powder, then ultra-fine platinum powder.
