The Japanese Bullhead of the Mountain Streams

Endemic to the Japanese islands of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu; the Japanese Bullhead thrives in the crystal-clear waters of mountain streams that reveal the wonderful life forms sustained within.

The skill of the Maki-e Shi is evident in the expert use of Maki-e lacquering techniques. Created by the Takamaki-e (or "raised" maki-e) technique; Seashells were crushed and applied to the fins. On top of those fins, the flow and splashes of water were expressed using the Tombo-nuri technique to bring to life a wondrous scene of fish living in clear water. Each pattern created by this technique is unique and irreproducible.
