Using varied colored stones to create patterns on pavements, Greek artists were among the first to define this art form and elevate it to a higher level of perfection using small pieces called ‘Tesserae’; which the Romans later used to adorn floors and walls of monuments and churches. The Byzantine period found newer iterations of this form of art where colored glass and reflective gold and silver leaf was used to create geometric and figurative patterns on ceilings. The Moors brought a more mathematical and geometric layer to mosaics, focusing on repetition and multiplication of flora and figures.
